Our amazing fitness guru Shoya Clough provided some amazing tips on how to be confident in your own skin. It is easier said than done, but when you make the necessary steps towards bettering your self value the results will be monumental.

For some people confidence is a natural characteristic and for others it’s something they have to work very hard on. Nevertheless, self-confidence is based on both tangible and intangible components. For example, talent, skills, achievements, and external appearance work together to create very confident people. Personally, I try to keep both my external and internal person happy so that I may have a balanced and well—rounded perspective about myself.  There are a few things that I’ve learned in my young life that has contributed to me being confident in my own skin, they are:

  1. What are you good at?-  Everyone is good at something. Take pride in whatever your talents and accomplishments are whether big or small. You might not have the voice of Adele, but you might be a good writer, painter, or you give good advice. The human race is made of talented people but sometimes we neglect our talents because we focus on others and their talents. That brings me to step two
  2. Be your biggest fan- Avoid spending too much time glorifying others and celebrate yourself. Often times we neglect ourselves and spend our energy admiring others. If you are on a rocky path, stable path, or transitional path during your life, approach it with care and admiration. You could be starting a new job or workout routine, feel good that you are doing that for yourself. Root for you.
  3. Love your body- Fall in love with how you look. Positive body image is a beautiful thing. People come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and color. As elementary as that sounds it’s true. You have to accept the physical form that you have and love it. I didn’t know that I needed to be loved by me until I’ve experienced racism, colorism and heartbreak.  Negativity is needed in life for personal growth. It shapes our perspective and allows us to take a hard look at ourselves, in this case, physically. Before my fitness journey, I had to become so comfortable with my body being the way it is that I can look at the woman who is my inspiration, my goal, and not feel threatened or lacking.
  4. Treat Yo-self- Invest in yourself. Make sure you take care of you. Save up and hit the spa with your friends once in awhile. Buy a new outfit, get your hair and nails done – doing these kind of maintenance can amp up your dopamine (feel good chemical) hence, making you fell happy and confident. When you look good you feel good.
  5. Accept failure- Failure can disappoint to the core and shake a person’s confidence. Sometimes it’s hard to accept failure whether it’s a failed class, relationship, or business venture . . . no matter the form you can get through it.  Failure doesn’t mean that you have lost, it simply means something didn’t workout at that specific moment, and it is completely normal.
Confidence is a lot more complex than people realize. It is what gives us the power to push through life trusting in ourselves. It is what makes a breakup easier to handle because we know he/she cheated because of their own personal weakness and it had nothing to do with what we didn’t do right or how we look. It’s what makes us walk in a room filled with people and we are comfortable enough to be ourselves and not desire to fit in. It is what makes a woman be in a room of stunning women and celebrate them rather than feel threatened or want to compete with them.
